Redfin Launches Sunscore to Show Exactly How Much Sunlight Homes Get
This 0-100 score is available exclusively on Redfin.com and helps home searchers easily understand property-level sun exposure.
Natural light is one of the hardest things to judge from listing photos or even a quick showing, which is why Redfin co-created Sunscore with Shadowmap, a sunlight analysis platform. It’s now available exclusively on Redfin.com.
Sunlight is an important feature for many homebuyers. According to a recent Redfin survey, nearly 70% of people say the amount of sunlight in their home affects their satisfaction with their living situation, and 11% say it’s non-negotiable when searching for a home.
Not only does sunlight provide aesthetic charm and mood-boosting serotonin, there are practical and financial benefits, too. Information on property-level sunlight tells what a home’s solar potential looks like, which could save homeowners thousands of dollars per year in energy costs over time.
What is Sunscore?
Sunscore is a simple, property-level rating that shows how much natural sunlight a home receives on a scale from 0-100.
0-50: Low sunlight
50-70: Moderate sunlight
70-80: Good sunlight
80-90: Very good sunlight
90-100: Exceptional sunlight
Instead of guessing, you can now see upfront whether a home is light-filled or likely to feel dim.
You’ll find Sunscore directly on a for-sale home’s listing page on Redfin. Here’s how to check it:
- Search for homes as you normally would on Redfin.com
- Click into any listing
- Scroll to the home details section
- Look for Sunscore (0–100) alongside other key property insights
Sunscore is presented like an easy-to-read metric, so you can quickly compare homes without digging through photos.
Later this year, you will also be able to search for homes with specific Sunscore ratings on Redfin using conversational search. That means that sunlight could soon be part of your initial plain-language home search, no filters or manual comparisons required.
For example, you could say, “Show me three-bedroom homes in San Diego under $1M that have at least an 80 Sunscore,” and the relevant homes would appear.

How Sunscore Works
Sunscore is based on detailed 3D modeling technology from Shadowmap that captures shadows on homes throughout the day during various times of the year.
Here’s what goes into each score:
- The home’s 3D shape and structure
- Surrounding buildings, trees, and terrain
- The sun’s position throughout the day
- Seasonal changes across the entire year
In other words, it accounts for things you might not notice, like how a neighboring building blocks afternoon light in winter or how tree cover changes by season.
Sunscore is available exclusively on Redfin.com. It will be available on the Redfin app for iOS and Android later this summer.
